At Serenity Yoga & Tai Chi, we believe wellness practices should be approached with respect, curiosity, and humility—not simply borrowed, packaged, and sold.
Yoga and Tai Chi are much more than physical exercise. They come from distinct and deeply rooted cultural traditions, with histories, philosophies, and practices that extend far beyond their modern Western expressions. Yoga has its roots in the Indian subcontinent, while Tai Chi (Taijiquan) developed within Chinese martial, philosophical, and health traditions. Both are living traditions with histories that extend far beyond their modern Western expressions.
We recognize that the growing popularity of these practices in the West has sometimes separated them from their cultural and historical contexts—and, at times, contributed to the commercialization or appropriation of traditions without meaningful acknowledgment of where they come from.
Our approach is one of appreciation rather than appropriation. That means learning about and honoring the traditions behind the practices we teach, acknowledging the teachers and lineages from which our knowledge comes, providing appropriate context, and remaining mindful of what is ours to share and what is not ours to claim.
We also recognize that we are practicing and teaching in a contemporary Western context. We don't claim to represent the entirety of either tradition, nor do we believe there is a single “right” way to engage with them. Instead, we strive to approach our teaching with cultural humility, respect, gratitude, and a commitment to continued learning.
For us, cultural appreciation isn't about getting everything perfect. It's about asking better questions:
Where does this practice come from? Who has carried it forward? What am I being entrusted with? And how can I share it without erasing the people, history, and culture that made it possible?
At Serenity, we invite people of all backgrounds to explore yoga and Tai Chi while honoring the traditions from which they come. Everyone is welcome here. The traditions are worthy of respect. And we're committed to continuing to learn.
